Military Morning Workout Routine: Train Before Your Day Starts

A military morning workout routine is a short, equipment-free bodyweight session done first thing, before the day can argue with you. Below is a free 10-minute version you can do tomorrow at dawn: a 2-minute warm-up, five movements for 2 rounds of 20 seconds each, and a short cool-down — with an easier option for every movement. MILITRO is a civilian program inspired by military training discipline and is not connected to any armed force.

Why the morning is the most defensible time to train

The main enemy of a training plan is not laziness — it is competing commitments. A session planned for the evening collides with late work, family, and a day's worth of accumulated tiredness. A session planned for the morning collides with nothing but your alarm. Soldiers train early for the same practical reason any disciplined program does: it is the slot with the fewest things that can cancel it.

There is also a decision-fatigue effect. Willpower is highest before the day has made a hundred demands on it. Training first means the choice "will I work out today" is answered before breakfast, and you spend the rest of the day as someone who already trained.

The free session: 10 minutes at dawn

All you need is floor space and a timer. Do each movement for 20 seconds, rest briefly as you transition, and complete 2 full rounds. If a movement is too hard, use its easier option — finishing the session matters more than the version you finish it with.

Warm-up: 2 minutes

  1. 30 seconds: arm circles, forward and backward
  2. 30 seconds: slow, easy squats at half depth
  3. 30 seconds: march in place, gradually lifting knees higher
  4. 30 seconds: cat-cow on hands and knees, moving slowly

The five movements

1. Push-ups

Hands under your shoulders, body in one straight line from head to heels. Lower your chest toward the floor and press back up with control.

Easier option: Incline push-ups — hands on a chair or sofa edge

2. Bodyweight squats

Feet about shoulder-width. Sit your hips back and down, chest up and heels down, until your thighs are about parallel, then drive back to standing.

Easier option: Sit-to-stand from a chair

3. Plank shoulder taps

Hold a push-up position with your hips level, then lift one hand to tap the opposite shoulder without letting your body sway. Alternate sides.

Easier option: Knee plank taps

4. Reverse lunges

Step one foot back and lower until both knees are about 90 degrees, keeping your torso tall. Return to standing and switch legs.

Easier option: Split-stance lunge holding a wall

5. Mountain climbers

From a push-up position, drive one knee toward your chest, then quickly switch legs, like running in place with your hands on the floor.

Easier option: Slow mountain climbers at walking pace

Cool-down: 1 minute

Walk in place for 20 seconds to bring your breathing down, then hold a standing quad stretch on each leg for about 20 seconds.

How to make it a habit, not a decision

  • Same time every day. Your body learns the schedule faster than your motivation does.
  • Prepare the night before. Clothes out, floor clear, alarm set — remove every morning decision.
  • Keep it short on bad days. A 5-minute version still keeps the streak alive; a skipped session starts a new, worse habit.
  • Track it. A visible calendar of finished mornings is quiet, effective pressure to continue.

Should you train before eating?

For a light-to-moderate 10-minute session, training before breakfast is comfortable for most people and largely a matter of preference. Drink a glass of water first — you lose fluid overnight. If you feel weak or dizzy without food, have something small beforehand. There is no magic in the fasted state; the magic is in the session happening at all. If you have a medical condition, clear any new routine with a doctor first.

How the MILITRO kit helps

A free morning session shows you the style. What turns mornings into results is a plan that removes the daily "what do I do today" question. The MILITRO kit gives you 28 days of morning-length sessions in a fixed order — five movements per training day in timed sets, week-by-week progression, exercise videos, and an easier option for every movement. With the optional coaching emails, each day's session arrives at your chosen morning time and unlocks the next one when you mark it done. Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to work out right after waking up?

For healthy people, light-to-moderate morning exercise is fine and common. Move gently for the first few minutes, keep the session at your normal level rather than testing new maximums when stiff, and hydrate first. If you have a heart condition or other health concern, ask a doctor before starting any training program.

How long should a morning workout be?

Ten to twenty minutes is the sweet spot. Morning routines succeed by being short enough to never be worth skipping. A focused 10-minute bodyweight session, done daily, beats an ambitious hour that happens twice.

Do I need a longer warm-up in the morning?

Give yourself one to two extra minutes. Joints can be stiff after sleep, so start with easy pace and range-of-motion work — arm circles and slow squats — before the main movements. The session below already includes this.

Is the MILITRO program a morning program?

You can do it at any time, but the sessions are short and equipment-free, which makes the morning the most popular slot among challenge users. Choose a time you can defend every day — for most people, that is before the day's other demands arrive.

Own your mornings for 28 days

One morning session proves you can. Twenty-eight of them, already scheduled, change what your mornings are for.

The plan is written. You just show up at dawn.
